In Bagan painting art
(1) A painting drawn only on plain canvas
(2) Painting painted with sand on linen
(3) There are 3 main types of sand-carved paintings, which are made by sticking thick sand on the cloth (some of them only apply sand to the area where the body needs to be carved).
The first type of painting, which is only painted on canvas, exists now, but it is becoming less and less. This is because the second and third types of sanding on the linen are more beautiful and strange, and later people feel that they like it. However, painting on canvas, which is the first type, is the most durable for the long term, so there are those who prefer it.
The materials used for those paintings
Cloth
In the past, pure cotton was used for linen, but now they use poplin linen mixed with cotton imported from Mandalay, which is suitable for calculating and drawing. There are people who use pure cotton, but it has become rare.
Glue
Before sticking the sand on the cloth, we tried natural tama glue, but because it didn't last long, we only used a type of glue called Thailand milk glue.
Sand
The sand is mainly washed from the Bonnu ( very soft sand ) silt by the river with water and 4/5 layers of dirt and garbage until it becomes white. If you want a yellow sand color, you use river sand. (It is known that river sand is used more in sand embossing art)
In simple sand painting, the sand is applied only 2/3 on the cloth. In sand embossing/sand carving art, you have to apply at least 5 layers of sand, 4 types of sand for the color you want: river sand, silt sand black stone crushed sand, It can be learned that they use the red sand that is laid on the red soil.
Colour
Once the required layer of sand is applied to the cloth, the outline is drawn and painted. In painting, they mainly use acrylic paint, while oil paint is only drawn by those who like it (not everyone can paint in oil). However, even acrylic paint is not cheap, so I learned that for some sales lines, by using a mixture of Thai milk glue and Fuji paint, you can get a long-lasting color. What is unique is that some artists use indigo and indigo in their own way. Soot, They add red clay from the riverside to create color.
Types of sand cloth painting
(1) Sand Painting
It is the first type that appeared first. If you say that, like the clothes painting that appeared since the Pagan period, Under a white cloth, I traced the original wall painting on the mirror table with the support of the paper. With the light from under the glass table, the outlines on the paper below were clearly visible on the canvas, and I was able to start drawing. For their own design, they draw freely without needing to use a pen or outline paper. After that, they began to patiently paint with the paints mentioned above, whether it was an imitation of the original wall painting color in the lines on the clothes or a color of their choice.
(2) Sand Carving Painting
He is a very popular creation, First mentioned above, you can wipe the glue on a white cloth. After that, put some fine river silt sand that has been washed with clean water into a cloth and take it out as if squeezing it out. The thickness of the sand is equal to the thickness of the cloth that has been wiped from the hand mirror. Sometimes I sanded thickly in one layer, and sometimes I sanded 2 times with glue to get a more compact sand.
(**It should be noted that this is not the only way to stick the sand. Some people put the cloth on the table and put the sand at the top end. They don't place the cloth evenly with their hands and let the sand slide down.
If the sand is thin, the color of the paint will be bright, and if the sand is thick or layered, the color will be dull. Some of them are wet color, some are thick sand and have a calm color.
Then sanded with glue and dried in the sun for 20 to 30 minutes. When it was dry, I had to apply a layer of glue on it before painting. The water resistance advantage is achieved only by applying a layer of glue before drawing.
After wiping a layer of glue on the sand cloth as a primer, as mentioned above, put the original wall art outline works on the glass table under the light. When you draw, depending on your knowledge/nature/experience, the lines of the outline are still, the paint is strong, and the neatness is broken. You can't get good work just by following the outline. It's really calm, and it's the art of drawing freely, As such, the entire sandal garment is drawn from the middle main design to the edge border.
After that, the above-mentioned acrylic paint is added to the areas inside the outline, either by mixing it with the original wall painting color or by adding a color of your own choice.
Depending on the details of the sand layering work design, this type takes about 2 to 5 days per car.
(3) Sand carving painting that is carved with thick sand on linen
This is called sand carving, and very few people can do it. It is known that only a few people can do it, The way it is made is that there are many times that sand gets stuck on the clothes, carving with tools such as small sharp blades, sand getting stuck in the outline, etc., and it takes a long time. The price is low compared to other things, so everyone likes it, but the demand for it is very low. For me, it is my favorite thing.
At least 5 layers of adhesive sand can be applied on the clothes. In the past, we used to sand the full size of the garment and carve the sand according to the required outline design, but now it is no longer the case. Now, they carve only small round/square designs in the side frames, and the other outlines are made as a carving pattern by sanding the adhesive limit paint several times in the same outline to the desired thickness. The hand is in,
As for the color, I usually keep it as the natural sand color, and now I only paint 1 or 2 colors as I like. The color is almost unpainted. Not the color but the original sand color is his police signature.
It's rare for a person to do all of the above alone. Some only do sand painting line, some only do sand carving line only. It's the same with the design, one has the original wall art design line, this one has the landscape line, the monk design line, etc. I am strong and strong,
The original designs of the sand painting are the designs that follow the outlines of the ancient original wall paintings, the images of gods, The dramas Bodhisatta bodhisattva figures, 550 Buddhists Although they only drew pictures of the old way of life, Later, it is still evident that the images of monks and nuns carrying the alms in the back shape of the monks and nuns are still used as a classical design. Those who like those things will hang it in a high place in a respectful frame and proudly keep it. After that, what became popular were landscape pictures and depictions of social life.
Those pictures are attached to the wall of the glass frame, and if you put yellow lights on them at night, they look like they are embossed with sand particles.
The above-mentioned drawing method, painting method, design, etc., depend on the artist and the sand, and they are slightly different from each other.
However, cloth painting is a craft art that has existed since ancient Pagan times. It is a pleasure to see the modern art of cloth painting that emerged based on the artworks inside the cave temples kept by the ancient Pagans. I can't stop praising the innovativeness of modern Pagan people, seeing not only those ancient works but also their own designs and designs....
